Tesla held a ceremony on Tuesday to mark the production launch of its Megapack energy storage plant in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area, meaning Tesla''s China operations has entered a new phase, the Global Times has learned.

[Photo/Xinhua] As Tesla''s first energy storage gigafactory outside the United States, the new Lin-gang plant only took nine months from groundbreaking, which took place in May 2024, to official operation.
The energy storage factory covers an area of approximately 200,000 square meters, which is equivalent to the size of 30 standard soccer fields. It initially plans to produce 10,000 Megapack units a year, with a storage capacity of nearly 40 GWh.
Covering about 200,000 square meters, the new energy storage project attracts a total investment of 1.45 billion yuan ($200 million).
