Supercapacitors usually have an energy density of 5–10 Wh/kg, which limits their use in applications that need long-term energy storage.

Generally, if carbon-based material is used, it falls into the category of electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC). For Transition metal oxides, MXene, MOFs or conducting polymers, etc., it falls into the pseudocapacitance category.
