Slovenian glassmaker Steklarna Hrastnik has installed the first B2B solar power plant in Slovenia, set up by GEN-I and Razvojni center Novi materiali (RCeNeM). Steklarna Hrastnik will use the generated electricity for the production of hydrogen, thus reducing CO2 emissions.
According to GEN-I’s press release, the construction of the solar power plant is part of the OPERH2 project, which is being co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union, from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Per analysis published by the World Bank which considers natural features of a location such as altitude, humidity, cloud cover, and topography, Slovenia''s solar PV potential is relatively low compared to global resources, but is comparable to that of other central and eastern European countries which lie north of the Alps.
Gen-I has set up a solar PV system atop a glass factory in Slovenia. The array’s electricity will be used to generate hydrogen from an electrolyzer. The green hydrogen is then added to natural gas, which is used to fire the furnaces at the factory.
