Solar batteries present an emerging class of devices which enable simultaneous energy conversion and energy storage in one single device. This high level of integration enables new energy storage concepts ranging from short-term solar energy buffers to light-enhanced batteries, thus opening up exciting vistas for decentralized energy storage.
The concepts presented herein provide design principles to develop solar batteries with specific performance characteristics and thus target applications, especially as a “buffer” system for intermittent renewable energy supply as well as decentralized and cost-effective energy storage. By utilizing resistors, capacitors, and constant voltage sources, the dynamic characteristics of batteries can be simulated, enabling a better understanding and management of lithium-ion batteries. Fig. 6 (a) illustrates a universal equivalent model for energy storage batteries.
