Galp, a Portuguese energy company, has announced plans to build a 5 MW/20 MWh battery storage system in Portugal, in collaboration with Powin. The system at one of Galp’s solar plants will enable it to adjust its PV production profile and meet its energy requirements. This project marks Powin’s first venture in Europe.
February 2025 Chinese battery manufacturer CALB has confirmed its plans to build a production facility for lithium-ion batteries in Portugal. The factory with an annual capacity of 15 gigawatt-hours is intended to start production in 2028. According CALB, the investment amounts to two billion euros.
The 5 MW/20 MWh battery system will be built at one of Galp’s solar power plants near the village of Alcoutim. The announcement marks Galp’s attempt to hybridize its solar power production portfolio.
The 48 lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) battery containers, each with a storage capacity of 5,015 kWh, would be Sungrow’s ST5015 kWh-2500 kW-2h products. Newcon40 applied to the to Portugal’s Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) for the 400 megavolt ampere (MVA) solar project in 2019.
