This historical artifact is a collection of three objects found in Khujut Rabu in the southeast of Baghdad near the ruins of Ctesiphon metropolis, the Parthian, and later Sassanid, Capital. The ancient battery was lost during the looting frenzies caused by the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
A man sitting next to the remains of the ransacked Museum of Iraq When the United States commenced the 2003 invasion of Iraq, thousands of items and artifacts from the National Museum of Iraq were stolen, including the Baghdad Battery. Despite extensive searches for the artifact, it has never been found.
The Baghdad Battery, regardless of its true purpose, reminds us of something essential: ancient civilizations were not primitive. The Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Greeks, and others developed astonishing technologies—water clocks, irrigation systems, astronomical observations, and medical treatments—that laid the foundation for modern science.
Some of the original 12 Baghdad Batteries can be seen at the National Museum of Iraq. Unfortunately, the museum is currently closed due to the 2003 looting which saw nearly half of its collection stolen.
