Mitigation of sub-synchronous oscillations Voltage/power system oscillations in the grid are observed under different operational conditions and faults. For instance, 17-Hz power system oscillations with a maximum peak-to-peak magnitude of 1.57%, as the ones previously presented, appear when the output of the wind farm is above 130 MW.
1. Introduction As the power system generation mix is shifting from synchronous generators (SGs) to inverter-based resources (IBRs) such as wind, solar PV, and battery energy storage systems (BESSs), the dynamic behavior of the grid becomes more dependent on the fast response of power electronics and converter control dynamics .
Sub-synchronous oscillations are becoming commonplace in weak areas of power systems with high levels of renewable generation, affecting their operation. Moreover, there is a lack of methods and techniques that facilitate the understanding of such phenomena and the analysis of mitigation alternatives from a practical-knowledge point of view.
Between October 2020 and August 2021, more than 180 voltage oscillations events have been captured in the WMZ using a voltage anomaly tool. Fig. 2 (b) shows one such recorded oscillation lasting near twelve minutes and with a frequency of ≈ 17 Hz and a maximum peak-to-peak variation of 2.2%. Fig. 2.
