Doherty power amplifier (DPA), combines two power amplifiers to optimize the power efficiency at the average and peak powers. For single-band LTE signals, DPAs can exhibit an average efficiency around 50%. To maximize the power efficiency of the main and peaking PAs used in DPA, waveform engineering is used [107,108].
As expected, the DPA has its highest bandwidth at full power while still providing an excellent bandwidth (≥300 MHz) at 6 dB power back-off.
This chapter presents a digital polar Doherty power amplifier (PA) fully integrated in a 65-nm bulk CMOS process. It achieves +27.3 dBm peak output power and 32.5% peak PA drain efficiency at 3.82 GHz and 3.60 GHz, respectively.
