Practical challenges and future directions in graphite anode summarized. Graphite has been a near-perfect and indisputable anode material in lithium-ion batteries, due to its high energy density, low embedded lithium potential, good stability, wide availability and cost-effectiveness.
The lithium-ion battery’s anode is made of graphite, while the cathode is made of LiFePO 4. The battery material is isotropic, so the thermal conductivity and specific heat transfer are considered constant. Lithium-ion batteries are made of several materials. The thermophysical properties of a Li-ion battery can be calculated using Equation (1).
Commercial LIBs require 1 kg of graphite for every 1 kWh battery capacity, implying a demand 10–20 times higher than that of lithium . Since graphite does not undergo chemical reactions during LIBs use, its high carbon content facilitates relatively easy recycling and purification compared to graphite ore.
Figure 11 demonstrates that charging the battery pack using graphite between the batteries results in the battery temperature remaining below 318 K, which is within the acceptable limit, while charging at a rate of 1C. The battery temperature exceeds the permissible range significantly when charging for 3C and 5C batteries.
